2023-02-06exit: Add and use make_task_dead.Eric W. Biederman1-1/+1
commit 0e25498f8cd43c1b5aa327f373dd094e9a006da7 upstream. There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. [ Upstream commit 340a982825f76f1cff0daa605970fe47321b5ee7 ] Actually in no-MMU SoCs(i.e. i.MXRT) ZERO_PAGE(vaddr) expands to ``` virt_to_page(0) ``` that in order expands to: ``` pfn_to_page(virt_to_pfn(0)) ``` and then virt_to_pfn(0) to: ``` ((((unsigned long)(0) - PAGE_OFFSET) >> PAGE_SHIFT) + PHYS_PFN_OFFSET) ``` where PAGE_OFFSET and PHYS_PFN_OFFSET are the DRAM offset(0x80000000) and PAGE_SHIFT is 12. This way we obtain 16MB(0x01000000) summed to the base of DRAM(0x80000000). When ZERO_PAGE(0) is then used, for example in bio_add_page(), the page gets an address that is out of DRAM bounds. So instead of using fake virtual page 0 let's allocate a dedicated zero_page during paging_init() and assign it to a global 'struct page * empty_zero_page' the same way mmu.c does and it's the same approach used in m68k with commit dc068f462179 as discussed here[0]. Then let's move ZERO_PAGE() definition to the top of pgtable.h to be in common between mmu.c and nommu.c. 2022-07-21ARM: 9209/1: Spectre-BHB: avoid pr_info() every time a CPU comes out of idleArd Biesheuvel1-3/+3
[ Upstream commit 0609e200246bfd3b7516091c491bec4308349055 ] Jon reports that the Spectre-BHB init code is filling up the kernel log with spurious notifications about which mitigation has been enabled, every time any CPU comes out of a low power state. Given that Spectre-BHB mitigations are system wide, only a single mitigation can be enabled, and we already print an error if two types of CPUs coexist in a single system that require different Spectre-BHB mitigations. This means that the pr_info() that describes the selected mitigation does not need to be emitted for each CPU anyway, and so we can simply emit it only once. In order to clarify the above in the log message, update it to describe that the selected mitigation will be enabled on all CPUs, including ones that are unaffected. If another CPU comes up later that is affected and requires a different mitigation, we report an error as before. 2022-07-21ARM: 9214/1: alignment: advance IT state after emulating Thumb instructionArd Biesheuvel1-0/+3

After emulating a misaligned load or store issued in Thumb mode, we have to advance the IT state by hand, or it will get out of sync with the actual instruction stream, which means we'll end up applying the wrong condition code to subsequent instructions. This might corrupt the program state rather catastrophically. So borrow the it_advance() helper from the probing code, and use it on CPSR if the emulated instruction is Thumb. 2021-12-22ARM: 8805/2: remove unneeded naked function usageNicolas Pitre7-194/+178

The naked attribute is known to confuse some old gcc versions when function arguments aren't explicitly listed as inline assembly operands despite the gcc documentation. That resulted in commit 9a40ac86152c ("ARM: 6164/1: Add kto and kfrom to input operands list."). Yet that commit has problems of its own by having assembly operand constraints completely wrong. If the generated code has been OK since then, it is due to luck rather than correctness. So this patch also provides proper assembly operand constraints, and removes two instances of redundant register usages in the implementation while at it. Inspection of the generated code with this patch doesn't show any obvious quality degradation either, so not relying on __naked at all will make the code less fragile, and avoid some issues with clang. The only remaining __naked instances (excluding the kprobes test cases) are exynos_pm_power_up_setup(), tc2_pm_power_up_setup() and cci_enable_port_for_self(. But in the first two cases, only the function address is used by the compiler with no chance of inlining it by mistake, and the third case is called from assembly code only. And the fact that no stack is available when the corresponding code is executed does warrant the __naked usage in those cases. [ Upstream commit 8e007b367a59bcdf484c81f6df9bd5a4cc179ca6 ] The L310_PREFETCH_CTRL register bits 28 and 29 to enable data and instruction prefetch respectively can also be accessed via the L2X0_AUX_CTRL register. They appear to be actually wired together in hardware between the registers. Changing them in the prefetch register only will get undone when restoring the aux control register later on. For this reason, set these bits in both registers during initialisation according to the devicetree property values. [ Upstream commit e1de94380af588bdf6ad6f0cc1f75004c35bc096 ] Recent work with KASan exposed the folling hard-coded bitmask in arch/arm/mm/proc-macros.S: bic rd, sp, #8128 bic rd, rd, #63 This forms the bitmask 0x1FFF that is coinciding with (PAGE_SIZE << THREAD_SIZE_ORDER) - 1, this code was assuming that THREAD_SIZE is always 8K (8192). As KASan was increasing THREAD_SIZE_ORDER to 2, I ran into this bug. Fix it by this little oneline suggested by Ard: bic rd, sp, #(THREAD_SIZE - 1) & ~63 Where THREAD_SIZE is defined using THREAD_SIZE_ORDER. We have to also include <linux/const.h> since the THREAD_SIZE expands to use the _AC() macro. [ Upstream commit 4ae5061a19b550dfe25397843427ed2ebab16b16 ] When the default processor handling was added to the function cpu_v7_spectre_init() it only excluded other ARM implemented processor cores. The Broadcom Brahma B53 core is not implemented by ARM so it ended up falling through into the set of processors that attempt to use the ARM_SMCCC_ARCH_WORKAROUND_1 service to harden the branch predictor. Since this workaround is not necessary for the Brahma-B53 this commit explicitly checks for it and prevents it from applying a branch predictor hardening workaround. 2019-11-10ARM: 8926/1: v7m: remove register save to stack before svcafzal mohammed1-1/+0
[ Upstream commit 2ecb287998a47cc0a766f6071f63bc185f338540 ] r0-r3 & r12 registers are saved & restored, before & after svc respectively. Intention was to preserve those registers across thread to handler mode switch. On v7-M, hardware saves the register context upon exception in AAPCS complaint way. Restoring r0-r3 & r12 is done from stack location where hardware saves it, not from the location on stack where these registers were saved. To clarify, on stm32f429 discovery board: 1. before svc, sp - 0x90009ff8 2. r0-r3,r12 saved to 0x90009ff8 - 0x9000a00b 3. upon svc, h/w decrements sp by 32 & pushes registers onto stack 4. after svc, sp - 0x90009fd8 5. r0-r3,r12 restored from 0x90009fd8 - 0x90009feb Above means r0-r3,r12 is not restored from the location where they are saved, but since hardware pushes the registers onto stack, the registers are restored correctly. Note that during register saving to stack (step 2), it goes past 0x9000a000. And it seems, based on objdump, there are global symbols residing there, and it perhaps can cause issues on a non-XIP Kernel (on XIP, data section is setup later). Based on the analysis above, manually saving registers onto stack is at best no-op and at worst can cause data section corruption. Hence remove storing of registers onto stack before svc. [ Upstream commit 4c0742f65b4ee466546fd24b71b56516cacd4613 ] It was reported that 72cd4064fcca "NOMMU: Toggle only bits in EXC_RETURN we are really care of" breaks NOMMU+XIP combination. It happens because saved EXC_RETURN gets overwritten when data section is relocated. The fix is to propagate EXC_RETURN via register and let relocation code to commit that value into memory. address [ Upstream commit 00d2ec1e6bd82c0538e6dd3e4a4040de93ba4fef ] The calculation of memblock_limit in adjust_lowmem_bounds() assumes that bank 0 starts from a PMD-aligned address. However, the beginning of the first bank may be NOMAP memory and the start of usable memory will be not aligned to PMD boundary. In such case the memblock_limit will be set to the end of the NOMAP region, which will prevent any memblock allocations. Mark the region between the end of the NOMAP area and the next PMD-aligned address as NOMAP as well, so that the usable memory will start at PMD-aligned address. 2019-10-07ARM: 8898/1: mm: Don't treat faults reported from cache maintenance as writesWill Deacon2-2/+3
[ Upstream commit 834020366da9ab3fb87d1eb9a3160eb22dbed63a ] Translation faults arising from cache maintenance instructions are rather unhelpfully reported with an FSR value where the WnR field is set to 1, indicating that the faulting access was a write. Since cache maintenance instructions on 32-bit ARM do not require any particular permissions, this can cause our private 'cacheflush' system call to fail spuriously if a translation fault is generated due to page aging when targetting a read-only VMA. In this situation, we will return -EFAULT to userspace, although this is unfortunately suppressed by the popular '__builtin___clear_cache()' intrinsic provided by GCC, which returns void. Although it's tempting to write this off as a userspace issue, we can actually do a little bit better on CPUs that support LPAE, even if the short-descriptor format is in use. On these CPUs, cache maintenance faults additionally set the CM field in the FSR, which we can use to suppress the write permission checks in the page fault handler and succeed in performing cache maintenance to read-only areas even in the presence of a translation fault. The new bits have been added: Bit [6] Secure or Non-secure stack Bit [5] Default callee register stacking Bit [0] Exception Secure which conflicts with hard-coded value of EXC_RETURN: In fact, we only care of few bits: Bit [3] Mode (0 - Handler, 1 - Thread) Bit [2] Stack pointer selection (0 - Main, 1 - Process) We can toggle only those bits and left other bits as they were on exception entry. It is basically, what patch does - saves EXC_RETURN when we do transition form Thread to Handler mode (it is first svc), so later saved value is used instead of EXC_RET_THREADMODE_PROCESSSTACK. [ Upstream commit fc67e6f120a388b611d94cc40baf99a5cc56b283 ] Installing the appropriate non-IOMMU DMA ops in arm_iommu_detch_device() serves the case where IOMMU-aware drivers choose to control their own mapping but still make DMA API calls, however it also affects the case when the arch code itself tears down the mapping upon driver unbinding, where the ops now get left in place and can inhibit arch_setup_dma_ops() on subsequent re-probe attempts. Fix the latter case by making sure that arch_teardown_dma_ops() cleans up whenever the ops were automatically installed by its counterpart. This was tracked down to the processor vtables being located in an init section, and therefore discarded after kernel boot, despite being required after boot to properly initialise the non-boot CPUs. Commit 383fb3ee8024d596f488d2dbaf45e572897acbdb upstream. In big.Little systems, some CPUs require the Spectre workarounds in paths such as the context switch, but other CPUs do not. In order to handle these differences, we need per-CPU vtables. We are unable to use the kernel's per-CPU variables to support this as per-CPU is not initialised at times when we need access to the vtables, so we have to use an array indexed by logical CPU number. We use an array-of-pointers to avoid having function pointers in the kernel's read/write .data section. 2018-12-21ARM: 8814/1: mm: improve/fix ARM v7_dma_inv_range() unaligned address handlingChris Cole1-3/+5
[ Upstream commit a1208f6a822ac29933e772ef1f637c5d67838da9 ] This patch addresses possible memory corruption when v7_dma_inv_range(start_address, end_address) address parameters are not aligned to whole cache lines. This function issues "invalidate" cache management operations to all cache lines from start_address (inclusive) to end_address (exclusive). When start_address and/or end_address are not aligned, the start and/or end cache lines are first issued "clean & invalidate" operation. The assumption is this is done to ensure that any dirty data addresses outside the address range (but part of the first or last cache lines) are cleaned/flushed so that data is not lost, which could happen if just an invalidate is issued. The problem is that these first/last partial cache lines are issued "clean & invalidate" and then "invalidate". This second "invalidate" is not required and worse can cause "lost" writes to addresses outside the address range but part of the cache line. If another component writes to its part of the cache line between the "clean & invalidate" and "invalidate" operations, the write can get lost. This fix is to remove the extra "invalidate" operation when unaligned addressed are used. A kernel module is available that has a stress test to reproduce the issue and a unit test of the updated v7_dma_inv_range(). It can be downloaded from http://ftp.sageembedded.com/outgoing/linux/cache-test-20181107.tgz. v7_dma_inv_range() is call by dmac_[un]map_area(addr, len, direction) when the direction is DMA_FROM_DEVICE. One can (I believe) successfully argue that DMA from a device to main memory should use buffers aligned to cache line size, because the "clean & invalidate" might overwrite data that the device just wrote using DMA. But if a driver does use unaligned buffers, at least this fix will prevent memory corruption outside the buffer. 2018-09-19ARM: 8799/1: mm: fix pci_ioremap_io() offset checkThomas Petazzoni1-1/+1
IO_SPACE_LIMIT is the ending address of the PCI IO space, i.e something like 0xfffff (and not 0x100000). Therefore, when offset = 0xf0000 is passed as argument, this function fails even though the offset + SZ_64K fits below the IO_SPACE_LIMIT. This makes the last chunk of 64 KB of the I/O space not usable as it cannot be mapped. This patch fixes that by substracing 1 to offset + SZ_64K, so that we compare the addrss of the last byte of the I/O space against IO_SPACE_LIMIT instead of the address of the first byte of what is after the I/O space. dma_alloc_from_contiguous() The CMA memory allocator doesn't support standard gfp flags for memory allocation, so there is no point having it as a parameter for dma_alloc_from_contiguous() function. Replace it by a boolean no_warn argument, which covers all the underlaying cma_alloc() function supports. This will help to avoid giving false feeling that this function supports standard gfp flags and callers can pass __GFP_ZERO to get zeroed buffer, what has already been an issue: see commit dd65a941f6ba ("arm64: dma-mapping: clear buffers allocated with FORCE_CONTIGUOUS flag"). ARMv8R adds support for VBAR and updates ID_PFR1 with the new filed Sec_frac (bits [23:20]): Security fractional field. When the Security field is 0000, determines the support for features from the ARMv7 Security Extensions. Permitted values are: 0000 No features from the ARMv7 Security Extensions are implemented. This value is not supported in ARMv8 if ID_PFR1 bits [7:4] are zero. 0001 The implementation includes the VBAR, and the TCR.PD0 and TCR.PD1 bits. 0010 As for 0001, plus the ability to access Secure or Non-secure physical memory is supported. All other values are reserved. This field is only valid when ID_PFR1[7:4] == 0, otherwise it holds the value 0000. 2018-07-12ARM: 8780/1: ftrace: Only set kernel memory back to read-only after bootSteven Rostedt (VMware)1-0/+9
Dynamic ftrace requires modifying the code segments that are usually set to read-only. To do this, a per arch function is called both before and after the ftrace modifications are performed. The "before" function will set kernel code text to read-write to allow for ftrace to make the modifications, and the "after" function will set the kernel code text back to "read-only" to keep the kernel code text protected. The issue happens when dynamic ftrace is tested at boot up. The test is done before the kernel code text has been set to read-only. But the "before" and "after" calls are still performed. The "after" call will change the kernel code text to read-only prematurely, and other boot code that expects this code to be read-write will fail. The solution is to add a variable that is set when the kernel code text is expected to be converted to read-only, and make the ftrace "before" and "after" calls do nothing if that variable is not yet set. This is similar to the x86 solution from commit 162396309745 ("ftrace, x86: make kernel text writable only for conversions").
