2014-12-12arch: Cleanup read_barrier_depends() and commentsAlexander Duyck1-0/+51
This patch is meant to cleanup the handling of read_barrier_depends and smp_read_barrier_depends. In multiple spots in the kernel headers read_barrier_depends is defined as "do {} while (0)", however we then go into the SMP vs non-SMP sections and have the SMP version reference read_barrier_depends, and the non-SMP define it as yet another empty do/while. With this commit I went through and cleaned out the duplicate definitions and reduced the number of definitions down to 2 per header. In addition I moved the 50 line comments for the macro from the x86 and mips headers that defined it as an empty do/while to those that were actually defining the macro, alpha and blackfin. 2014-11-11net: introduce SO_INCOMING_CPUEric Dumazet1-0/+2
Alternative to RPS/RFS is to use hardware support for multiple queues. Then split a set of million of sockets into worker threads, each one using epoll() to manage events on its own socket pool. Ideally, we want one thread per RX/TX queue/cpu, but we have no way to know after accept() or connect() on which queue/cpu a socket is managed. We normally use one cpu per RX queue (IRQ smp_affinity being properly set), so remembering on socket structure which cpu delivered last packet is enough to solve the problem. After accept(), connect(), or even file descriptor passing around processes, applications can use : int cpu; socklen_t len = sizeof(cpu); getsockopt(fd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_INCOMING_CPU, &cpu, &len); And use this information to put the socket into the right silo for optimal performance, as all networking stack should run on the appropriate cpu, without need to send IPI (RPS/RFS). Pull audit updates from Eric Paris: "So this change across a whole bunch of arches really solves one basic problem. We want to audit when seccomp is killing a process. seccomp hooks in before the audit syscall entry code. audit_syscall_entry took as an argument the arch of the given syscall. Since the arch is part of what makes a syscall number meaningful it's an important part of the record, but it isn't available when seccomp shoots the syscall... For most arch's we have a better way to get the arch (syscall_get_arch) So the solution was two fold: Implement syscall_get_arch() everywhere there is audit which didn't have it. Use syscall_get_arch() in the seccomp audit code. Having syscall_get_arch() everywhere meant it was a useless flag on the stack and we could get rid of it for the typical syscall entry. The other changes inside the audit system aren't grand, fixed some records that had invalid spaces. Better locking around the task comm field. Removing some dead functions and structs. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/percpu Pull percpu consistent-ops changes from Tejun Heo: "Way back, before the current percpu allocator was implemented, static and dynamic percpu memory areas were allocated and handled separately and had their own accessors. The distinction has been gone for many years now; however, the now duplicate two sets of accessors remained with the pointer based ones - this_cpu_*() - evolving various other operations over time. During the process, we also accumulated other inconsistent operations. This pull request contains Christoph's patches to clean up the duplicate accessor situation. __get_cpu_var() uses are replaced with with this_cpu_ptr() and __this_cpu_ptr() with raw_cpu_ptr(). Unfortunately, the former sometimes is tricky thanks to C being a bit messy with the distinction between lvalues and pointers, which led to a rather ugly solution for cpumask_var_t involving the introduction of this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr(). This converts most of the uses but not all. 2014-08-26alpha: Replace __get_cpu_varChristoph Lameter2-11/+11
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. 2014-07-17arch, locking: Ciao arch_mutex_cpu_relax()Davidlohr Bueso1-0/+1
The arch_mutex_cpu_relax() function, introduced by 34b133f, is hacky and ugly. It was added a few years ago to address the fact that common cpu_relax() calls include yielding on s390, and thus impact the optimistic spinning functionality of mutexes. Nowadays we use this function well beyond mutexes: rwsem, qrwlock, mcs and lockref. Since the macro that defines the call is in the mutex header, any users must include mutex.h and the naming is misleading as well. This patch (i) renames the call to cpu_relax_lowlatency ("relax, but only if you can do it with very low latency") and (ii) defines it in each arch's asm/processor.h local header, just like for regular cpu_relax functions. On all archs, except s390, cpu_relax_lowlatency is simply cpu_relax, and thus we can take it out of mutex.h. While this can seem redundant, I believe it is a good choice as it allows us to move out arch specific logic from generic locking primitives and enables future(?) archs to transparently define it, similarly to System Z. 2014-05-28PCI: Turn pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() into a weak functionHanjun Guo1-5/+0
pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() is only implemented by x86 now, and legacy ISA is not used by some architectures. Make pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() a __weak function to simplify the code. This removes the need for new platforms to add stub implementations of pcibios_penalize_isa_irq(). 2014-05-08sched/idle, alpha: Switch from TS_POLLING to TIF_POLLING_NRFLAGPeter Zijlstra1-2/+2
Standardize the idle polling indicator to TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG such that both TIF_NEED_RESCHED and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG are in the same word. This will allow us, using fetch_or(), to both set NEED_RESCHED and check for POLLING_NRFLAG in a single operation and avoid pointless wakeups. Changing from the non-atomic thread_info::status flags to the atomic thread_info::flags shouldn't be a big issue since most polling state changes were followed/preceded by a full memory barrier anyway. 2014-01-31alpha: fix broken network checksumMikulas Patocka1-2/+7
The patch 3ddc5b46a8e90f3c9251338b60191d0a804b0d92 breaks networking on alpha (there is a follow-up fix 5cfe8f1ba5eebe6f4b6e5858cdb1a5be4f3272a6, but networking is still broken even with the second patch). The patch 3ddc5b46a8e90f3c9251338b60191d0a804b0d92 makes csum_partial_copy_from_user check the pointer with access_ok. However, csum_partial_copy_from_user is called also from csum_partial_copy_nocheck and csum_partial_copy_nocheck is called on kernel pointers and it is supposed not to check pointer validity. This bug results in ssh session hangs if the system is loaded and bulk data are printed to ssh terminal. This patch fixes csum_partial_copy_nocheck to call set_fs(KERNEL_DS), so that access_ok in csum_partial_copy_from_user accepts kernel-space addresses. 2014-01-19net: introduce SO_BPF_EXTENSIONSMichal Sekletar1-0/+2
For user space packet capturing libraries such as libpcap, there's currently only one way to check which BPF extensions are supported by the kernel, that is, commit aa1113d9f85d ("net: filter: return -EINVAL if BPF_S_ANC* operation is not supported"). For querying all extensions at once this might be rather inconvenient. Therefore, this patch introduces a new option which can be used as an argument for getsockopt(), and allows one to obtain information about which BPF extensions are supported by the current kernel. As David Miller suggests, we do not need to define any bits right now and status quo can just return 0 in order to state that this versions supports SKF_AD_PROTOCOL up to SKF_AD_PAY_OFFSET. Later additions to BPF extensions need to add their bits to the bpf_tell_extensions() function, as documented in the comment. 2014-01-12arch: Clean up asm/barrier.h implementations using asm-generic/barrier.hPeter Zijlstra1-20/+5
We're going to be adding a few new barrier primitives, and in order to avoid endless duplication make more agressive use of asm-generic/barrier.h. Change the asm-generic/barrier.h such that it allows partial barrier definitions and fills out the rest with defaults. There are a few architectures (m32r, m68k) that could probably do away with their barrier.h file entirely but are kept for now due to their unconventional nop() implementation. 2013-12-21PCI: Convert pcibios_resource_to_bus() to take a pci_bus, not a pci_devYinghai Lu1-2/+2
These interfaces: pcibios_resource_to_bus(struct pci_dev *dev, *bus_region, *resource) pcibios_bus_to_resource(struct pci_dev *dev, *resource, *bus_region) took a pci_dev, but they really depend only on the pci_bus. And we want to use them in resource allocation paths where we have the bus but not a device, so this patch converts them to take the pci_bus instead of the pci_dev: pcibios_resource_to_bus(struct pci_bus *bus, *bus_region, *resource) pcibios_bus_to_resource(struct pci_bus *bus, *resource, *bus_region) In fact, with standard PCI-PCI bridges, they only depend on the host bridge, because that's the only place address translation occurs, but we aren't going that far yet.
