2010-06-12pktgen: increasing transmission granularityDaniel Turull1-0/+5
This patch increases the granularity of the rate generated by pktgen. The previous version of pktgen uses micro seconds (udelay) resolution when it was delayed causing gaps in the rates. It is changed to nanosecond (ndelay). Now any rate is possible. Also it allows to set, the desired rate in Mb/s or packets per second. The documentation has been updated. 2010-06-05bonding: allow user-controlled output slave selectionAndy Gospodarek1-2/+82
v2: changed bonding module version, modified to apply on top of changes from previous patch in series, and updated documentation to elaborate on multiqueue awareness that now exists in bonding driver. This patch give the user the ability to control the output slave for round-robin and active-backup bonding. Similar functionality was discussed in the past, but Jay Vosburgh indicated he would rather see a feature like this added to existing modes rather than creating a completely new mode. Jay's thoughts as well as Neil's input surrounding some of the issues with the first implementation pushed us toward a design that relied on the queue_mapping rather than skb marks. Round-robin and active-backup modes were chosen as the first users of this slave selection as they seemed like the most logical choices when considering a multi-switch environment. Round-robin mode works without any modification, but active-backup does require inclusion of the first patch in this series and setting the 'all_slaves_active' flag. This will allow reception of unicast traffic on any of the backup interfaces. This was tested with IPv4-based filters as well as VLAN-based filters with good results. More information as well as a configuration example is available in the patch to Documentation/networking/bonding.txt. 2010-06-02packet_mmap: expose hw packet timestamps to network packet capture utilitiesScott McMillan1-0/+26
This patch adds a setting, PACKET_TIMESTAMP, to specify the packet timestamp source that is exported to capture utilities like tcpdump by packet_mmap. PACKET_TIMESTAMP accepts the same integer bit field as SO_TIMESTAMPING. However, only the SOF_TIMESTAMPING_SYS_HARDWARE and SOF_TIMESTAMPING_RAW_HARDWARE values are currently recognized by PACKET_TIMESTAMP. SOF_TIMESTAMPING_SYS_HARDWARE takes precedence over SOF_TIMESTAMPING_RAW_HARDWARE if both bits are set. If PACKET_TIMESTAMP is not set, a software timestamp generated inside the networking stack is used (the behavior before this setting was added). 2010-05-28fs: introduce new truncate sequencenpiggin@suse.de1-1/+6
Introduce a new truncate calling sequence into fs/mm subsystems. Rather than setattr > vmtruncate > truncate, have filesystems call their truncate sequence from ->setattr if filesystem specific operations are required. vmtruncate is deprecated, and truncate_pagecache and inode_newsize_ok helpers introduced previously should be used. simple_setattr is introduced for simple in-ram filesystems to implement the new truncate sequence. Eventually all filesystems should be converted to implement a setattr, and the default code in notify_change should go away. simple_setsize is also introduced to perform just the ATTR_SIZE portion of simple_setattr (ie. changing i_size and trimming pagecache). To implement the new truncate sequence: - filesystem specific manipulations (eg freeing blocks) must be done in the setattr method rather than ->truncate. - vmtruncate can not be used by core code to trim blocks past i_size in the event of write failure after allocation, so this must be performed in the fs code. - convert usage of helpers block_write_begin, nobh_write_begin, cont_write_begin, and *blockdev_direct_IO* to use _newtrunc postfixed variants. These avoid calling vmtruncate to trim blocks (see previous). - inode_setattr should not be used. generic_setattr is a new function to be used to copy simple attributes into the generic inode. - make use of the better opportunity to handle errors with the new sequence. Big problem with the previous calling sequence: the filesystem is not called until i_size has already changed. This means it is not allowed to fail the call, and also it does not know what the previous i_size was. Also, generic code calling vmtruncate to truncate allocated blocks in case of error had no good way to return a meaningful error (or, for example, atomically handle block deallocation). It differs from the LM75 by having a 16-bit conf register and the temp registers have a minimum resolution of 12 bits; the extended conf register can select 13-bit resolution (which this driver does) and also change the update rate (which this driver currently doesn't use). Looking at this file, it seems to me to be hopelessly out of date relative to current Linux NUMA support. 2010-05-27memcg: move charge of file pagesDaisuke Nishimura1-6/+12
This patch adds support for moving charge of file pages, which include normal file, tmpfs file and swaps of tmpfs file. It's enabled by setting bit 1 of <target cgroup>/memory.move_charge_at_immigrate. Unlike the case of anonymous pages, file pages(and swaps) in the range mmapped by the task will be moved even if the task hasn't done page fault, i.e. they might not be the task's "RSS", but other task's "RSS" that maps the same file. And mapcount of the page is ignored(the page can be moved even if page_mapcount(page) > 1). So, conditions that the page/swap should be met to be moved is that it must be in the range mmapped by the target task and it must be charged to the old cgroup. 2010-05-27memcg: oom kill disable and oom statusKAMEZAWA Hiroyuki1-0/+23
This adds a feature to disable oom-killer for memcg, if disabled, of course, tasks under memcg will stop. But now, we have oom-notifier for memcg. And the world around memcg is not under out-of-memory. memcg's out-of-memory just shows memcg hits limit. Then, administrator or management daemon can recover the situation by - kill some process - enlarge limit, add more swap. - migrate some tasks - remove file cache on tmps (difficult ?) Unlike oom-killer, you can take enough information before killing tasks. Considering containers or other resource management softwares in userland, event notification of OOM in memcg should be implemented. The usage is very similar to threshold notifier, but control file is memory.oom_control and no arguments other than eventfd is required. % cgroup_event_notifier /cgroup/A/memory.oom_control dummy (About cgroup_event_notifier, see Documentation/cgroup/) Signed-off-by: KAMEZAWA Hiroyuki <kamezawa.hiroyu@jp.fujitsu.com> Cc: Daisuke Nishimura <nishimura@mxp.nes.nec.co.jp> Cc: Balbir Singh <balbir@in.ibm.com> Cc: Daisuke Nishimura <nishimura@mxp.nes.nec.co.jp> Cc: David Rientjes <rientjes@google.com> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2010-05-26driver core: add devname module aliases to allow module on-demand auto-loadingKay Sievers1-0/+2
This adds: alias: devname:<name> to some common kernel modules, which will allow the on-demand loading of the kernel module when the device node is accessed. Ideally all these modules would be compiled-in, but distros seems too much in love with their modularization that we need to cover the common cases with this new facility. It will allow us to remove a bunch of pretty useless init scripts and modprobes from init scripts. The static device node aliases will be carried in the module itself. The program depmod will extract this information to a file in the module directory: $ cat /lib/modules/2.6.34-00650-g537b60d-dirty/modules.devname # Device nodes to trigger on-demand module loading. microcode cpu/microcode c10:184 fuse fuse c10:229 ppp_generic ppp c108:0 tun net/tun c10:200 dm_mod mapper/control c10:235 Udev will pick up the depmod created file on startup and create all the static device nodes which the kernel modules specify, so that these modules get automatically loaded when the device node is accessed: $ /sbin/udevd --debug ... static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/cpu/microcode' c10:184 static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/fuse' c10:229 static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/ppp' c108:0 static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/net/tun' c10:200 static_dev_create_from_modules: mknod '/dev/mapper/control' c10:235 udev_rules_apply_static_dev_perms: chmod '/dev/net/tun' 0666 udev_rules_apply_static_dev_perms: chmod '/dev/fuse' 0666 A few device nodes are switched to statically allocated numbers, to allow the static nodes to work. This might also useful for systems which still run a plain static /dev, which is completely unsafe to use with any dynamic minor numbers. Note: The devname aliases must be limited to the *common* and *single*instance* device nodes, like the misc devices, and never be used for conceptually limited systems like the loop devices, which should rather get fixed properly and get a control node for losetup to talk to, instead of creating a random number of device nodes in advance, regardless if they are ever used. This facility is to hide the mess distros are creating with too modualized kernels, and just to hide that these modules are not compiled-in, and not to paper-over broken concepts. 2010-05-25ieee1394: schedule for removalStefan Richter1-0/+10
All application domains that are supported by the old ieee1394 driver stack are supported by the newer firewire driver stack too. There is now good and extensive experience with the newer stack from deployment in Fedora since F7 as well as by enthusiast users of other distributions. The new drivers have consequently been recommended as the default ones since 2.6.33, in order to fix some severe usability problems of FireWire on Linux due to limitations of the old stack. It is now high time to announce when the obsolete drivers will be removed. Signed-off-by: Stefan Richter <stefanr@s5r6.in-berlin.de> Acked-by: Jarod Wilson <jarod@redhat.com>

2010-05-25mm: compaction: add a tunable that decides when memory should be compacted ↵Mel Gorman1-0/+15
and when it should be reclaimed The kernel applies some heuristics when deciding if memory should be compacted or reclaimed to satisfy a high-order allocation. One of these is based on the fragmentation. If the index is below 500, memory will not be compacted. This choice is arbitrary and not based on data. To help optimise the system and set a sensible default for this value, this patch adds a sysctl extfrag_threshold. The kernel will only compact memory if the fragmentation index is above the extfrag_threshold.
