2015-12-18[media] DocBook media: update VIDIOC_CREATE_BUFS documentationHans Verkuil1-16/+14
During the Seoul media workshop we decided to relax the VIDIOC_CREATE_BUFS specification so it would no longer require drivers to validate the format field since almost no driver did that anyway. Instead drivers use the buffer size(s) based on the format type and the corresponding format fields and will ignore any other fields. If the size cannot be used an error is returned, otherwise the size is used as-is. Signed-off-by: Hans Verkuil <hans.verkuil@cisco.com> Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>
2015-12-04[media] use https://linuxtv.org for LinuxTV URLsMauro Carvalho Chehab9-11/+11
While https was always supported on linuxtv.org, only in Dec 3 2015 the website is using valid certificates. As we're planning to drop pure http support on some future, change all references at the media subsystem to point to the https URL instead. 2015-11-19DocBook: only copy stuff to media_api if media xml is generatedMauro Carvalho Chehab1-2/+4
It is possible to use: make DOCBOOKS=device-drivers.xml htmldocs To produce just a few docbooks. In such case, the media docs won't be built, causing the makefile target to return an error. While this is ok for human eyes, if the above is used on an script, it would cause troubles. Fix it by only creating/filling the media_api directory if the media_api.xml is found at DOCBOOKS. 2015-11-17[media] Docbook: media: Document changes on struct v4l2_ext_controlsRicardo Ribalda2-0/+32

2015-11-17[media] media/core: Replace ctrl_class with whichRicardo Ribalda1-3/+3
Replace the obsolete field ctrl_class with "which". Make sure it not used in future modules by commenting out the field with ifndef __KERNEL_ . The field cannot be simply removed because that would be change on the kenel API to the userspace (and we don't like that). 2015-11-17[media] DocBook media: s/input stream/capture stream/Hans Verkuil1-5/+5
The term "input stream" is confusing since it is not clear whether this is an input stream from the point of view of the application or from the point of view of the hardware. So replace it with the more standard term "capture stream". Signed-off-by: Hans Verkuil <hans.verkuil@cisco.com> Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>
2015-11-17[media] DocBook/media/Makefile: Do not fail mkdir if dir already existsGraham Whaley1-1/+1
Commit 5240f4e68d42 ("[media] DocBook/media/Makefile: Avoid make htmldocs to fail") introduced a mkdir which is always called through install_media_images from the Documentation/DocBook/Makefile htmldocs rule. If you run 'make htmldocs' more than once you get: mkdir: cannot create directory ‘./Documentation/DocBook//media_api’: File exists Add -p to the mkdir to continue no matter if the dir already exists. 2015-11-16[media] demux.h: move documentation overview from device-drivers.tmplMauro Carvalho Chehab1-65/+6

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound Pull sound updates from Takashi Iwai: "Here is the first batch of updates for sound system on 4.4-rc1. Again at this time, the update looks fairly calm; no big changes in either ALSA core or ASoC infrastructures, rather all small cleanups, in addition to the new stuff as usual. The biggest changes are about Firewire sound devices. It gained lots of new device support, and MIDI functionality. Also there are updates for a few still working-in-progress stuff (topology API and ASoC skylake), too. But overall, this update should give no big surprise. 2015-10-22ALSA: Remove transfer_ack_{begin,end} callbacks from struct snd_pcm_runtimeLars-Peter Clausen1-17/+2
While there is nothing wrong with the transfer_ack_begin and transfer_ack_end callbacks per-se, the last documented user was part of the alsa-driver 0.5.12a package, which was released 14 years ago and even predates the upstream integration of the ALSA core and has subsequently been superseded by newer alsa-driver releases. This seems to indicate that there is no need for having these callbacks and they are just cruft that can be removed. DRM is a lot more than a direct rendering manager nowadays, and there's also a bunch of things worth documenting for gpu driver developers outside of drivers/gpu/drm, like vgaarb, vga_switcheroo or the various hardware buses like host1x and ipu-v3. To avoid further confusion let's rename the top-level to reflect reality. And yes I'm already looking forward to when we need to replace the G in GPU with a * ;-) Inspired by a thread with Lukas since he refused to include the vga_switcheroo docs into the drm docs because it's not drm. 2015-10-16drm: Enforce unlocked ioctl operation for kms driver ioctlsDaniel Vetter1-1/+3
With the prep patches for i915 all kms drivers either have DRM_UNLOCKED on all their ioctls. Or the ioctl always directly returns with an invariant return value when in modeset mode. But that's only the case for i915 and radeon. The drm core ioctls are unfortunately too much a mess still to dare this. Follow-up patches will remove DRM_UNLOCKED from all kms drivers to prove that this is indeed the case. 2015-10-13nl80211: allow BSS data to include CLOCK_BOOTTIME timestampDmitry Shmidt1-2/+3
For location and connectivity services, userspace would often like to know the time when the BSS was last seen. The current "last seen" value is calculated in a way that makes it less useful, especially if the system suspended in the meantime. Add the ability for the driver to report a real CLOCK_BOOTTIME stamp that can then be reported to userspace (if present). Drivers wishing to use this must be converted to the new API to call cfg80211_inform_bss_data() or cfg80211_inform_bss_frame_data(). They need to ensure the reported value is accurate enough even when the frame might have been buffered in the device (e.g. firmware.) 2015-10-10[media] DocBook: Add documentation about the demux APIMauro Carvalho Chehab1-6/+71
There are several stuff at media's kdapi.xml that don't belong there, as it documents the Kernel internal ABI, and not the userspace API. Add the documentation here. The hole kdapi.xml will be removed on a latter patch, after we finish documenting what's there at the proper places. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>
2015-10-07[media] dvb: Remove unused frontend sources at demux.h and sync docMauro Carvalho Chehab1-9/+4
The DVB core has a provision for other frontend sources, but no drivers use it. The kdapi.xml contains provision for some other frontend source types, but it is not in sync with the code. So, remove the unused types and sync both files. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>

2015-10-07[media] dvb: get rid of enum dmx_successMauro Carvalho Chehab1-39/+5
This enum is not actually used anymore. The only value used from the enum is DMX_OK, passed as a parameter on two callbacks. Yet, this value is not used anywhere. So, just remove it. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>
2015-10-07[media] DocBook: Move struct dmx_demux kABI doc to demux.hMauro Carvalho Chehab2-1034/+1
The DocBook/media/dvb/kdapi.xml contains the description of the kABI for DVB. The problem is that, by being maintained on a separate file and not being updated for years, it got outdated. So, for example, some callback parameters were changed, but the DocBook were still using the old stuff. As a first step to fix it, let's move the documentation of struct dmx_demux into demux.h and fix the parameters used there. For now, don't document any other field nor touch the descriptions that got moved, letting this job to other patches. That makes easier to review the patch. PS.: Please notice that an additional patch will be needed in order to fix the return values (some uses non-existent return codes) and to the functions and callbacks mentioned at the descriptions. 2015-10-05[media] DocBook: Convert struct lirc_driver to doc-nano formatMauro Carvalho Chehab1-0/+1

2015-10-05[media] DocBook: add documentation for tuner-types.hMauro Carvalho Chehab1-0/+1
The tuner-types.h is part of the V4L2 core and should be touched for every new tuner added. So, it deserves to be documented at the device-drivers DocBook. Add it to device-drivers.tmpl and add descriptions for enum param_type and struct tuner_range. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>
2015-10-05[media] DocBook: Document include/media/tuner.hMauro Carvalho Chehab1-0/+1
This is part of the V4L2 core, so its kABI should be documented at device-drivers DocBook. Add the meta-tags for that. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>

- Add missing V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_U32 documentation - Remove 'which are actually different on the hardware' sentence which is confusing. 2015-09-30drm/doc: Update docs about device instance setupDaniel Vetter1-81/+18
->load is deprecated, bus functions are deprecated and everyone should use drm_dev_alloc&register. So update the .tmpl (and pull a bunch of the overview docs into the sourcecode to increase chances that it'll stay in sync in the future) and add notes to functions which are deprecated. I didn't bother to clean up and document the unload sequence similarly since that one is still a bit a mess: drm_dev_unregister does way too much, drm_unplug_dev does what _unregister should be doing but then has the complication of promising something it doesn't actually do (it doesn't unplug existing open fds for instance, only prevents new ones). Motivated since I don't want to hunt every new driver for usage of drm_platform_init any more ;-) v2: Reword the deprecation note for ->load a bit, using Laurent's suggestion as an example (but making the wording a bit stronger even). Fix spelling in commit message. v3: More spelling fixes from Laurent.
