ethnl_req_get_phydev() is used to lookup a phy_device, in the case an ethtool netlink command targets a specific phydev within a netdev's topology. It takes as a parameter a const struct nlattr *header that's used for error handling : if (!phydev) { NL_SET_ERR_MSG_ATTR(extack, header, "no phy matching phyindex"); return ERR_PTR(-ENODEV); } In the notify path after a ->set operation however, there's no request attributes available. The typical callsite for the above function looks like: phydev = ethnl_req_get_phydev(req_base, tb[ETHTOOL_A_XXX_HEADER], info->extack); So, when tb is NULL (such as in the ethnl notify path), we have a nice crash. It turns out that there's only the PLCA command that is in that case, as the other phydev-specific commands don't have a notification. This commit fixes the crash by passing the cmd index and the nlattr array separately, allowing NULL-checking it directly inside the helper. Fix the netlink type for hardware timestamp flags, which are represented as a bitset of flags. Although only one flag is supported currently, the correct netlink bitset type should be used instead of u32 to keep consistency with other fields. Address this by adding a new named string set description for the hwtstamp flag structure. The code has been introduced in the current release so the uAPI change is still okay. net: ethtool: add support for structured PHY statistics

Introduce a new way to report PHY statistics in a structured and standardized format using the netlink API. This new method does not replace the old driver-specific stats, which can still be accessed with `ethtool -S `. The structured stats are available with `ethtool -S --all-groups`. We had a number of bugs in the past because developers forgot to fully test dumps, which pass NULL as info to .prepare_data. .prepare_data implementations would try to access info->extack leading to a null-deref. Now that dumps and notifications can access struct genl_info we can pass it in, and remove the info null checks. Outer nest for ETHTOOL_A_STRSET_STRINGSETS is not accounted for. This may result in ETHTOOL_MSG_STRSET_GET producing a warning like: calculated message payload length (684) not sufficient WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 30967 at net/ethtool/netlink.c:369 ethnl_default_doit+0x87a/0xa20 and a splat. As usually with such warnings three conditions must be met for the warning to trigger: - there must be no skb size rounding up (e.g. reply_size of 684); - string set must be per-device (so that the header gets populated); - the device name must be at least 12 characters long. all in all with current user space it looks like reading priv flags is the only place this could potentially happen. ethtool: add interface to read RMON stats

Most devices maintain RMON (RFC 2819) stats - particularly the "histogram" of packets received by size. Unlike other RFCs which duplicate IEEE stats, the short/oversized frame counters in RMON don't seem to match IEEE stats 1-to-1 either, so expose those, too. Do not expose basic packet, CRC errors etc - those are already otherwise covered. Because standard defines packet ranges only up to 1518, and everything above that should theoretically be "oversized" - devices often create their own ranges.
