For example, create three task: hot1 -&gt; cold -&gt; hot2.  After all three
task are created, each allocate memory 128MB.  the hot1/hot2 task
continuously access 128 MB memory, while the cold task only accesses its
memory briefly and then call madvise(MADV_FREE).  However, khugepaged
still prioritizes scanning the cold task and only scans the hot2 task
after completing the scan of the cold task.

All folios in VM_DROPPABLE are lazyfree, Collapsing maintains that
property, so we can just collapse and memory pressure in the future will
free it up.  In contrast, collapsing in !VM_DROPPABLE does not maintain
that property, the collapsed folio will not be lazyfree and memory
pressure in the future will not be able to free it up.

So if the user has explicitly informed us via MADV_FREE that this memory
will be freed, and this vma does not have VM_DROPPABLE flags, it is
appropriate for khugepaged to skip it only, thereby avoiding unnecessary
scan and collapse operations to reducing CPU wastage.

Here are the performance test results:
(Throughput bigger is better, other smaller is better)

Testing on x86_64 machine:

Patch series "Improve khugepaged scan logic", v8.

This series improves the khugepaged scan logic and reduces CPU consumption
by prioritizing scanning tasks that access memory frequently.

The following data is traced by bpftrace[1] on a desktop system.  After
the system has been left idle for 10 minutes upon booting, a lot of
SCAN_PMD_MAPPED or SCAN_NO_PTE_TABLE are observed during a full scan by
khugepaged.

The khugepaged has below phenomenon: the khugepaged list is scanned in a
FIFO manner, as long as the task is not destroyed,
1. the task no longer has memory that can be collapsed into hugepage,
   continues scan it always.
2. the task at the front of the khugepaged scan list is cold, they are
   still scanned first.
3. everyone scan at intervals of khugepaged_scan_sleep_millisecs
   (default 10s). If we always scan the above two cases first, the valid
   scan will have to wait for a long time.

For the first case, when the memory is either SCAN_PMD_MAPPED or
SCAN_NO_PTE_TABLE or SCAN_PTE_MAPPED_HUGEPAGE [5], just skip it.

For the second case, if the user has explicitly informed us via
MADV_FREE that these folios will be freed, just skip it only.

The below is some performance test results.

Patch series "mm/khugepaged: fix dirty page handling for MADV_COLLAPSE",
v5.

MADV_COLLAPSE on file-backed mappings fails with -EINVAL when TEXT pages
are dirty. This affects scenarios like package/container updates or
executing binaries immediately after writing them, etc.

The issue is that collapse_file() triggers async writeback and returns
SCAN_FAIL (maps to -EINVAL), expecting khugepaged to revisit later. But
MADV_COLLAPSE is synchronous and userspace expects immediate success or
a clear retry signal.

Reproduction:
 - Compile or copy 2MB-aligned executable to XFS/ext4 FS
 - Call MADV_COLLAPSE on .text section
 - First call fails with -EINVAL (text pages dirty from copy)
 - Second call succeeds (async writeback completed)

This patch (of 2):

When collapse_file encounters dirty or writeback pages in file-backed
mappings, it currently returns SCAN_FAIL which maps to -EINVAL.  This is
misleading as EINVAL suggests invalid arguments, whereas dirty/writeback
pages represent transient conditions that may resolve on retry.

Introduce SCAN_PAGE_DIRTY_OR_WRITEBACK to cover both dirty and writeback
states, mapping it to -EAGAIN.  For MADV_COLLAPSE, this provides userspace
with a clear signal that retry may succeed after writeback completes.  For
khugepaged, this is harmless as it will naturally revisit the range during
periodic scans after async writeback completes.

The current hugepage collapse scan results include two separate values,
SCAN_PMD_NONE and SCAN_PMD_NULL, which are handled identically by the
consuming code.

To reduce confusion and improve long-term maintenance, this commit merges
these two functionally equivalent states into a single, clearer
identifier: SCAN_NO_PTE_TABLE

The "addr" and "is_shmem" arguments have different order in TP_PROTO and
TP_ARGS.  This resulted in the incorrect trace result:

The value of "addr" is wrong because it was treated as bool value, the
type of is_shmem.

Fix the order in TP_PROTO to keep "addr" is before "is_shmem" since the
original patch review suggested this order to achieve best packing.

And use "lx" for "addr" instead of "ld" in TP_printk because address is
typically shown in hex.

After the fix, the trace result looks correct:

With the rework of how the __string() handles dynamic strings where it
saves off the source string in field in the helper structure[1], the
assignment of that value to the trace event field is stored in the helper
value and does not need to be passed in again.

This means that with:

  __string(field, mystring)

Which use to be assigned with __assign_str(field, mystring), no longer
needs the second parameter and it is unused. With this, __assign_str()
will now only get a single parameter.

There's over 700 users of __assign_str() and because coccinelle does not
handle the TRACE_EVENT() macro I ended up using the following sed script:

I then searched for __assign_str() that did not end with ';' as those
were multi line assignments that the sed script above would fail to catch.

Note, the same updates will need to be done for:

  __assign_str_len()
  __assign_rel_str()
  __assign_rel_str_len()

I tested this with both an allmodconfig and an allyesconfig (build only for both).

Replace the use of pages with folios.  Saves a few calls to
compound_head() and removes some uses of obsolete functions.
