[ Upstream commit aaa8736370db1a78f0e8434344a484f9fd20be3b ] When building with CONFIG_XEN_PV=y, .text symbols are emitted into the .notes section so that Xen can find the "startup_xen" entry point. This information is used prior to booting the kernel, so relocations are not useful. In fact, performing relocations against the .notes section means that the KASLR base is exposed since /sys/kernel/notes is world-readable. To avoid leaking the KASLR base without breaking unprivileged tools that are expecting to read /sys/kernel/notes, skip performing relocations in the .notes section. The values readable in .notes are then identical to those found in System.map. x86/build: Treat R_386_PLT32 relocation as R_386_PC32

commit bb73d07148c405c293e576b40af37737faf23a6a upstream. This is similar to commit b21ebf2fb4cd ("x86: Treat R_X86_64_PLT32 as R_X86_64_PC32") but for i386. As far as the kernel is concerned, R_386_PLT32 can be treated the same as R_386_PC32. R_386_PLT32/R_X86_64_PLT32 are PC-relative relocation types which can only be used by branches. If the referenced symbol is defined externally, a PLT will be used. R_386_PC32/R_X86_64_PC32 are PC-relative relocation types which can be used by address taking operations and branches. If the referenced symbol is defined externally, a copy relocation/canonical PLT entry will be created in the executable. On x86-64, there is no PIC vs non-PIC PLT distinction and an R_X86_64_PLT32 relocation is produced for both `call/jmp foo` and `call/jmp foo@PLT` with newer (2018) GNU as/LLVM integrated assembler. This avoids canonical PLT entries (st_shndx=0, st_value!=0). On i386, there are 2 types of PLTs, PIC and non-PIC. Currently, the GCC/GNU as convention is to use R_386_PC32 for non-PIC PLT and R_386_PLT32 for PIC PLT. Copy relocations/canonical PLT entries are possible ABI issues but GCC/GNU as will likely keep the status quo because (1) the ABI is legacy (2) the change will drop a GNU ld diagnostic for non-default visibility ifunc in shared objects. clang-12 -fno-pic (since [1]) can emit R_386_PLT32 for compiler generated function declarations, because preventing canonical PLT entries is weighed over the rare ifunc diagnostic. x86/insn: Make inat-tables.c suitable for pre-decompression code

The inat-tables.c file has some arrays in it that contain pointers to other arrays. These pointers need to be relocated when the kernel image is moved to a different location. The pre-decompression boot-code has no support for applying ELF relocations, so initialize these arrays at runtime in the pre-decompression code to make sure all pointers are correctly initialized. kbuild: rename hostprogs-y/always to hostprogs/always-y

In old days, the "host-progs" syntax was used for specifying host programs. It was renamed to the current "hostprogs-y" in 2004. It is typically useful in scripts/Makefile because it allows Kbuild to selectively compile host programs based on the kernel configuration. This commit renames like follows: always -> always-y hostprogs-y -> hostprogs So, scripts/Makefile will look like this: always-$(CONFIG_BUILD_BIN2C) += ... always-$(CONFIG_KALLSYMS) += ... ... hostprogs := $(always-y) $(always-m) I think this makes more sense because a host program is always a host program, irrespective of the kernel configuration. We want to specify which ones to compile by CONFIG options, so always-y will be handier. The "always", "hostprogs-y", "hostprogs-m" will be kept for backward compatibility for a while.
