Certain portions of code always need to be position-independent
regardless of CONFIG_RELOCATABLE, including code which is executed in an
idmap or which is executed before relocations are applied. In some
kernel configurations the LLD linker generates position-dependent
veneers for such code, and when executed these result in early boot-time
failures.

Marc Zyngier encountered a boot failure resulting from this when
building a (particularly cursed) configuration with LLVM, as he reported
to the list:

In Marc's kernel configuration, the .head.text and .rodata.text sections
end up more than 128MiB apart, requiring a veneer to branch between the
two:

from _stext (in .head.text) to primary_entry (in .rodata.text):

... and as this is executed early in boot before the kernel is mapped in
TTBR1 this results in a silent boot failure.

Fix this by passing '--pic-veneer' to the linker, which will cause the
linker to use position-independent veneers, e.g.

I've opted to pass '--pic-veneer' unconditionally, as:

* In addition to solving the boot failure, these sequences are generally
  nicer as they require fewer instructions and don't need to perform
  data accesses.

* While the position-independent veneer sequences have a limited +/-2GiB
  range, this is not a new restriction. Even kernels built with
  CONFIG_RELOCATABLE=n are limited to 2GiB in size as we have several
  structues using 32-bit relative offsets and PPREL32 relocations, which
  are similarly limited to +/-2GiB in range. These include extable
  entries, jump table entries, and alt_instr entries.

* GNU LD defaults to using position-independent veneers, and supports
  the same '--pic-veneer' option, so this change is not expected to
  adversely affect GNU LD.

I've tested with GNU LD 2.30 to 2.42 inclusive and LLVM 13.0.1 to 19.1.0
inclusive, using the kernel.org binaries from:

A common issue in Makefile is a race in parallel building.

You need to be careful to prevent multiple threads from writing to the
same file simultaneously.

Commit 3939f3345050 ("ARM: 8418/1: add boot image dependencies to not
generate invalid images") addressed such a bad scenario.

A similar symptom occurs with the following command:

The log "OBJCOPY arch/arm64/boot/Image" is displayed twice.

It indicates that two threads simultaneously enter arch/arm64/boot/
and write to arch/arm64/boot/Image.

It occasionally leads to a build failure:

vmlinuz.efi depends on Image, but such a dependency is not specified
in arch/arm64/Makefile.

Pull Kbuild updates from Masahiro Yamada:

 - Remove potentially incomplete targets when Kbuid is interrupted by
   SIGINT etc in case GNU Make may miss to do that when stderr is piped
   to another program.

 - Rewrite the single target build so it works more correctly.

 - Fix rpm-pkg builds with V=1.

 - List top-level subdirectories in ./Kbuild.

 - Ignore auto-generated __kstrtab_* and __kstrtabns_* symbols in
   kallsyms.

 - Avoid two different modules in lib/zstd/ having shared code, which
   potentially causes building the common code as build-in and modular
   back-and-forth.

 - Unify two modpost invocations to optimize the build process.

 - Remove head-y syntax in favor of linker scripts for placing
   particular sections in the head of vmlinux.

 - Bump the minimal GNU Make version to 3.82.

 - Clean up misc Makefiles and scripts.

Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux.
Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry
point.

A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script.
Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section,
which is placed before the normal ".text" section.

I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system
perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code
placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner.

I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is
a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run.

Many architectures have similar install.sh scripts.

The first half is really generic; it verifies that the kernel image
and System.map exist, then executes ~/bin/${INSTALLKERNEL} or
/sbin/${INSTALLKERNEL} if available.

The second half is kind of arch-specific; it copies the kernel image
and System.map to the destination, but the code is slightly different.

Factor out the generic part into scripts/install.sh.

Use the EOR3 instruction to implement xor_blocks() if the instruction is
available, which is the case if the CPU implements the SHA-3 extension.
This is about 20% faster on Apple M1 when using the 5-way version.

Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.rst suggests to use "archclean" for
cleaning arch/$(SRCARCH)/boot/, but it is not a hard requirement.

Since commit d92cc4d51643 ("kbuild: require all architectures to have
arch/$(SRCARCH)/Kbuild"), we can use the "subdir- += boot" trick for
all architectures. This can take advantage of the parallel option (-j)
for "make clean".

I also cleaned up the comments in arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile. The "archdep"
target no longer exists.

Pull arm64 updates from Catalin Marinas:

 - Support for 32-bit tasks on asymmetric AArch32 systems (on top of the
   scheduler changes merged via the tip tree).

 - More entry.S clean-ups and conversion to C.

 - MTE updates: allow a preferred tag checking mode to be set per CPU
   (the overhead of synchronous mode is smaller for some CPUs than
   others); optimisations for kernel entry/exit path; optionally disable
   MTE on the kernel command line.

 - Kselftest improvements for SVE and signal handling, PtrAuth.

 - Fix unlikely race where a TLBI could use stale ASID on an ASID
   roll-over (found by inspection).

 - Miscellaneous fixes: disable trapping of PMSNEVFR_EL1 to higher
   exception levels; drop unnecessary sigdelsetmask() call in the
   signal32 handling; remove BUG_ON when failing to allocate SVE state
   (just signal the process); SYM_CODE annotations.

 - Other trivial clean-ups: use macros instead of magic numbers, remove
   redundant returns, typos.
