2019-04-20net: rework SIOCGSTAMP ioctl handlingArnd Bergmann1-6/+1
The SIOCGSTAMP/SIOCGSTAMPNS ioctl commands are implemented by many socket protocol handlers, and all of those end up calling the same sock_get_timestamp()/sock_get_timestampns() helper functions, which results in a lot of duplicate code. With the introduction of 64-bit time_t on 32-bit architectures, this gets worse, as we then need four different ioctl commands in each socket protocol implementation. To simplify that, let's add a new .gettstamp() operation in struct proto_ops, and move ioctl implementation into the common sock_ioctl()/compat_sock_ioctl_trans() functions that these all go through. We can reuse the sock_get_timestamp() implementation, but generalize it so it can deal with both native and compat mode, as well as timeval and timespec structures. 2018-06-28Revert changes to convert to ->poll_mask() and aio IOCB_CMD_POLLLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
The poll() changes were not well thought out, and completely unexplained. They also caused a huge performance regression, because "->poll()" was no longer a trivial file operation that just called down to the underlying file operations, but instead did at least two indirect calls. Indirect calls are sadly slow now with the Spectre mitigation, but the performance problem could at least be largely mitigated by changing the "->get_poll_head()" operation to just have a per-file-descriptor pointer to the poll head instead. That gets rid of one of the new indirections. But that doesn't fix the new complexity that is completely unwarranted for the regular case. The (undocumented) reason for the poll() changes was some alleged AIO poll race fixing, but we don't make the common case slower and more complex for some uncommon special case, so this all really needs way more explanations and most likely a fundamental redesign. "int *socklen" parameter is awkward. For example, if caller does not care, it still needs to provide on-stack storage for the value it does not need. None of the many FOO_getname() functions of various protocols ever used old value of *socklen. They always just overwrite it. This change drops this parameter, and makes all these functions, on success, return length of sockaddr. It's always >= 0 and can be differentiated from an error. Tests in callers are changed from "if (err)" to "if (err < 0)", where needed. rpc_sockname() lost "int buflen" parameter, since its only use was to be passed to kernel_getsockname() as &buflen and subsequently not used in any way. This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. It seems like a historic accident that these return unsigned char *, and in many places that means casts are required, more often than not. It seems like a historic accident that these return unsigned char *, and in many places that means casts are required, more often than not. 2013-11-21net: rework recvmsg handler msg_name and msg_namelen logicHannes Frederic Sowa1-9/+7
This patch now always passes msg->msg_namelen as 0. recvmsg handlers must set msg_namelen to the proper size <= sizeof(struct sockaddr_storage) to return msg_name to the user. This prevents numerous uninitialized memory leaks we had in the recvmsg handlers and makes it harder for new code to accidentally leak uninitialized memory. Optimize for the case recvfrom is called with NULL as address. We don't need to copy the address at all, so set it to NULL before invoking the recvmsg handler. We can do so, because all the recvmsg handlers must cope with the case a plain read() is called on them. read() also sets msg_name to NULL. Also document these changes in include/linux/net.h as suggested by David Miller. Changes since RFC: Set msg->msg_name = NULL if user specified a NULL in msg_name but had a non-null msg_namelen in verify_iovec/verify_compat_iovec. This doesn't affect sendto as it would bail out earlier while trying to copy-in the address. It also more naturally reflects the logic by the callers of verify_iovec. With this change in place I could remove " if (!uaddr || msg_sys->msg_namelen == 0) msg->msg_name = NULL ". This change does not alter the user visible error logic as we ignore msg_namelen as long as msg_name is NULL. Also remove two unnecessary curly brackets in ___sys_recvmsg and change comments to netdev style. I'm not sure why, but the hlist for each entry iterators were conceived list_for_each_entry(pos, head, member) The hlist ones were greedy and wanted an extra parameter: hlist_for_each_entry(tpos, pos, head, member) Why did they need an extra pos parameter? I'm not quite sure. Not only they don't really need it, it also prevents the iterator from looking exactly like the list iterator, which is unfortunate. Besides the semantic patch, there was some manual work required: - Fix up the actual hlist iterators in linux/list.h - Fix up the declaration of other iterators based on the hlist ones. - A very small amount of places were using the 'node' parameter, this was modified to use 'obj->member' instead. - Coccinelle didn't handle the hlist_for_each_entry_safe iterator properly, so those had to be fixed up manually. implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. Have atalk_route_packet() return NET_RX_SUCCESS not NET_XMIT_SUCCESS atalk_route_packet() returns NET_RX_DROP if it's call to aarp_send_ddp() returns NET_XMIT_DROP.
