2010-05-22sanitize vfs_fsync calling conventionsChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
Now that the last user passing a NULL file pointer is gone we can remove the redundant dentry argument and associated hacks inside vfs_fsynmc_range. The next step will be removig the dentry argument from ->fsync, but given the luck with the last round of method prototype changes I'd rather defer this until after the main merge window. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo4-0/+4
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-01-05add a vfs_fsync helperChristoph Hellwig1-10/+2
Fsync currently has a fdatawrite/fdatawait pair around the method call, and a mutex_lock/unlock of the inode mutex. All callers of fsync have to duplicate this, but we have a few and most of them don't quite get it right. This patch adds a new vfs_fsync that takes care of this. It's a little more complicated as usual as ->fsync might get a NULL file pointer and just a dentry from nfsd, but otherwise gets afile and we want to take the mapping and file operations from it when it is there. Notes on the fsync callers: - ecryptfs wasn't calling filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait on the lower file - coda wasn't calling filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait on the host file, and returning 0 when ->fsync was missing - shm wasn't calling either filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait nor taking i_mutex. Now given that shared memory doesn't have disk backing not doing anything in fsync seems fine and I left it out of the vfs_fsync conversion for now, but in that case we might just not pass it through to the lower file at all but just call the no-op simple_sync_file directly. 2008-10-23[PATCH] move executable checking into ->permission()Miklos Szeredi2-1/+4
For execute permission on a regular files we need to check if file has any execute bits at all, regardless of capabilites. This check is normally performed by generic_permission() but was also added to the case when the filesystem defines its own ->permission() method. In the latter case the filesystem should be responsible for performing this check. Move the check from inode_permission() inside filesystems which are not calling generic_permission(). Create a helper function execute_ok() that returns true if the inode is a directory or if any execute bits are present in i_mode. Also fix up the following code: - coda control file is never executable - sysctl files are never executable - hfs_permission seems broken on MAY_EXEC, remove - hfsplus_permission is eqivalent to generic_permission(), remove Signed-off-by: Miklos Szeredi <mszeredi@suse.cz>

2008-07-25coda: remove CODA_FS_OLD_APIAdrian Bunk3-22/+3
While fixing CONFIG_ leakages to the userspace kernel headers I ran into CODA_FS_OLD_API. After five years, are there still people using the old API left? This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry, vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere. 2007-10-19pid namespaces: round up the APIPavel Emelianov1-1/+1
The set of functions process_session, task_session, process_group and task_pgrp is confusing, as the names can be mixed with each other when looking at the code for a long time. The proposals are to * equip the functions that return the integer with _nr suffix to represent that fact, * and to make all functions work with task (not process) by making the common prefix of the same name. For monotony the routines signal_session() and set_signal_session() are replaced with task_session_nr() and set_task_session(), especially since they are only used with the explicit task->signal dereference. 2007-07-22coda: remove CODA_STORE/CODA_RELEASE upcallsJan Harkes3-108/+7
This is an variation on the patch sent by Christoph Hellwig which kills file_count abuse by the Coda kernel module by moving the coda_flush functionality into coda_release. However part of reason we were using the coda_flush callback was to allow Coda to pass errors that occur during writeback from the userspace cache manager back to close(). As Al Viro explained on linux-fsdevel, it is impossible to guarantee that such errors can in fact be returned back to the caller. There are many cases where the last reference to a file is not released by the close system call and it is also impossible to pick some close as a 'last-close' and delay it until all other references have been destroyed. The CODA_STORE/CODA_RELEASE upcall combination is clearly a broken design, and it is better to remove it completely. Set MS_NOATIME flag to avoid unnecessary calls when the coda inode is accessed. Also, set statfs.f_bsize to 4k. 1k is obviously too small for the suggested IO size. 2007-07-19coda: allow removal of busy directoriesJan Harkes1-14/+9
A directory without children may still be busy when it is the cwd for some process. We can safely remove such a directory because the VFS prevents further operations. Also we don't need to call d_delete as it is already called in vfs_rmdir. 2007-07-19coda: fix nlink updates for directoriesJan Harkes1-46/+60
The Coda client sets the directory link count to 1 when it isn't sure how many subdirectories we have. In this case we shouldn't change the link count in the kernel when a subdirectory is created or removed. 2007-07-19coda: correctly invalidate cached access rightsJan Harkes1-1/+1
Change the epoch value to forces a refresh instead of clearing the cached rights mask and block all further accesses to the object. Signed-off-by: Jan Harkes <jaharkes@cs.cmu.edu> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-07-19coda: do not grab an uninitialized fd when the open upcall returns an errorJan Harkes3-8/+12
When open fails the fd in the response is uninitialized and we ended up taking a reference on the file struct and never released it. Signed-off-by: Jan Harkes <jaharkes@cs.cmu.edu> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
