2009-01-07remove linux/hardirq.h from asm-generic/local.hRussell King2-0/+2
While looking at reducing the amount of architecture namespace pollution in the generic kernel, I found that asm/irq.h is included in the vast majority of compilations on ARM (around 650 files.) Since asm/irq.h includes a sub-architecture include file on ARM, this causes a negative impact on the ccache's ability to re-use the build results from other sub-architectures, so we have a desire to reduce the dependencies on asm/irq.h. It turns out that a major cause of this is the needless include of linux/hardirq.h into asm-generic/local.h. The patch below removes this include, resulting in some 250 to 300 files (around half) of the kernel then omitting asm/irq.h. My test builds still succeed, provided two ARM files are fixed (arch/arm/kernel/traps.c and arch/arm/mm/fault.c) - so there may be negative impacts for this on other architectures. Note that x86 does not include asm/irq.h nor linux/hardirq.h in its asm/local.h, so this patch can be viewed as bringing the generic version into line with the x86 version. 2009-01-07mm: show node to memory section relationship with symlinks in sysfsGary Hade6-6/+7
Show node to memory section relationship with symlinks in sysfs Add /sys/devices/system/node/nodeX/memoryY symlinks for all the memory sections located on nodeX. For example: /sys/devices/system/node/node1/memory135 -> ../../memory/memory135 indicates that memory section 135 resides on node1. Also revises documentation to cover this change as well as updating Documentation/ABI/testing/sysfs-devices-memory to include descriptions of memory hotremove files 'phys_device', 'phys_index', and 'state' that were previously not described there. In addition to it always being a good policy to provide users with the maximum possible amount of physical location information for resources that can be hot-added and/or hot-removed, the following are some (but likely not all) of the user benefits provided by this change. Immediate: - Provides information needed to determine the specific node on which a defective DIMM is located. This will reduce system downtime when the node or defective DIMM is swapped out. - Prevents unintended onlining of a memory section that was previously offlined due to a defective DIMM. This could happen during node hot-add when the user or node hot-add assist script onlines _all_ offlined sections due to user or script inability to identify the specific memory sections located on the hot-added node. The consequences of reintroducing the defective memory could be ugly. - Provides information needed to vary the amount and distribution of memory on specific nodes for testing or debugging purposes. Future: - Will provide information needed to identify the memory sections that need to be offlined prior to physical removal of a specific node. Symlink creation during boot was tested on 2-node x86_64, 2-node ppc64, and 2-node ia64 systems. Symlink creation during physical memory hot-add tested on a 2-node x86_64 system. 2009-01-07mm: invoke oom-killer from page faultNick Piggin2-34/+14
Rather than have the pagefault handler kill a process directly if it gets a VM_FAULT_OOM, have it call into the OOM killer. With increasingly sophisticated oom behaviour (cpusets, memory cgroups, oom killing throttling, oom priority adjustment or selective disabling, panic on oom, etc), it's silly to unconditionally kill the faulting process at page fault time. Create a hook for pagefault oom path to call into instead. Only converted x86 and uml so far. 2009-01-07mm: report the MMU pagesize in /proc/pid/smapsMel Gorman2-0/+13
The KernelPageSize entry in /proc/pid/smaps is the pagesize used by the kernel to back a VMA. This matches the size used by the MMU in the majority of cases. However, one counter-example occurs on PPC64 kernels whereby a kernel using 64K as a base pagesize may still use 4K pages for the MMU on older processor. To distinguish, this patch reports MMUPageSize as the pagesize used by the MMU in /proc/pid/smaps. When CONFIG_PROC_FS is unset, include/linux/interrupt.h defines init_irq_proc() as an empty function. arch/sparc/kernel/irq_32.c defines this function unconditionally. Fix the latter so that it only defines this function when CONFIG_PROC_FS is set. 2009-01-06get rid of the last symlink in uml buildAl Viro1-14/+11
We need to make asm-offsets.h contents visible for objects built with userland headers. Instead of creating a symlink, just have the file with equivalent include (relative to location of header) created once. That kills the last symlink used in arch/um builds. Additionally, both generated headers can become dependencies of archprepare now, killing the misuse of prepare. 2009-01-05parisc: fix module loading failure of large kernel modulesHelge Deller2-83/+139
On 32bit (and sometimes 64bit) and with big kernel modules like xfs or ipv6 the relocation types R_PARISC_PCREL17F and R_PARISC_PCREL22F may fail to reach their PLT stub if we only create one big stub array for all sections at the beginning of the core or init section. With this patch we now instead add individual PLT stub entries directly in front of the code sections where the stubs are actually called. This reduces the distance between the PCREL location and the stub entry so that the relocations can be fulfilled. While calculating the final layout of the kernel module in memory, the kernel module loader calls arch_mod_section_prepend() to request the to be reserved amount of memory in front of each individual section. Tested with 32- and 64bit kernels. Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Rusty Russell <rusty@rustcorp.com.au>
