2018-07-20x86/mm/pti: Keep permissions when cloning kernel text in pti_clone_kernel_text()Joerg Roedel1-1/+1
Mapping the kernel text area to user-space makes only sense if it has the same permissions as in the kernel page-table. If permissions are different this will cause a TLB reload when using the kernel page-table, which is as good as not mapping it at all. On 64-bit kernels this patch makes no difference, as the whole range cloned by pti_clone_kernel_text() is mapped RO anyway. On 32 bit there are writeable mappings in the range, so just keep the permissions as they are. 2018-07-20x86/mm/pti: Make pti_clone_kernel_text() compile on 32 bitJoerg Roedel3-8/+12
The pti_clone_kernel_text() function references __end_rodata_hpage_align, which is only present on x86-64. This makes sense as the end of the rodata section is not huge-page aligned on 32 bit. Nevertheless a symbol is required for the function that points at the right address for both 32 and 64 bit. Introduce __end_rodata_aligned for that purpose and use it in pti_clone_kernel_text(). 2018-07-20x86/entry/32: Add PTI CR3 switches to NMI handler codeJoerg Roedel1-6/+33
The NMI handler is special, as it needs to leave with the same CR3 as it was entered with. This is required because the NMI can happen within kernel context but with user CR3 already loaded, i.e. after switching to user CR3 but before returning to user space. 2018-07-20x86/entry/32: Simplify debug entry pointJoerg Roedel1-32/+3

2018-07-20x86/entry/32: Handle Entry from Kernel-Mode on Entry-StackJoerg Roedel1-1/+115
It is possible that the kernel is entered from kernel-mode and on the entry-stack. The most common way this happens is when an exception is triggered while loading the user-space segment registers on the kernel-to-userspace exit path. The segment loading needs to be done after the entry-stack switch, because the stack-switch needs kernel %fs for per_cpu access. When this happens, make sure to leave the kernel with the entry-stack again, so that the interrupted code-path runs on the right stack when switching to the user-cr3. Detect this condition on kernel-entry by checking CS.RPL and %esp, and if it happens, copy over the complete content of the entry stack to the task-stack. This needs to be done because once the exception handler is entereed, the task might be scheduled out or even migrated to a different CPU, so this cannot rely on the entry-stack contents. Leave a marker in the stack-frame to detect this condition on the exit path. On the exit path the copy is reversed, copy all of the remaining task-stack back to the entry-stack and switch to it. APM_DO_POP_SEGS does not restore fs/gs which were zeroed by APM_DO_ZERO_SEGS. Trying to access __preempt_count with zeroed fs doesn't really work. 2018-07-15x86/events/intel/ds: Fix bts_interrupt_threshold alignmentHugh Dickins1-3/+5
Markus reported that BTS is sporadically missing the tail of the trace in the perf_event data buffer: [decode error (1): instruction overflow] shown in GDB; and bisected it to the conversion of debug_store to PTI. A little "optimization" crept into alloc_bts_buffer(), which mistakenly placed bts_interrupt_threshold away from the 24-byte record boundary. Intel SDM Vol 3B 17.4.9 says "This address must point to an offset from the BTS buffer base that is a multiple of the BTS record size." Revert "max" from a byte count to a record count, to calculate the bts_interrupt_threshold correctly: which turns out to fix problem seen. Setting pv_irq_ops for Xen PV domains should be done as early as possible in order to support e.g. very early printk() usage. 2018-07-12ARM: 8780/1: ftrace: Only set kernel memory back to read-only after bootSteven Rostedt (VMware)1-0/+9
Dynamic ftrace requires modifying the code segments that are usually set to read-only. To do this, a per arch function is called both before and after the ftrace modifications are performed. The "before" function will set kernel code text to read-write to allow for ftrace to make the modifications, and the "after" function will set the kernel code text back to "read-only" to keep the kernel code text protected. The issue happens when dynamic ftrace is tested at boot up. The test is done before the kernel code text has been set to read-only. But the "before" and "after" calls are still performed. The "after" call will change the kernel code text to read-only prematurely, and other boot code that expects this code to be read-write will fail. The solution is to add a variable that is set when the kernel code text is expected to be converted to read-only, and make the ftrace "before" and "after" calls do nothing if that variable is not yet set. This is similar to the x86 solution from commit 162396309745 ("ftrace, x86: make kernel text writable only for conversions"). 2018-07-11arm64: neon: Fix function may_use_simd() return error statusYandong Zhao1-12/+7
It does not matter if the caller of may_use_simd() migrates to another cpu after the call, but it is still important that the kernel_neon_busy percpu instance that is read matches the cpu the task is running on at the time of the read. This means that raw_cpu_read() is not sufficient. kernel_neon_busy may appear true if the caller migrates during the execution of raw_cpu_read() and the next task to be scheduled in on the initial cpu calls kernel_neon_begin(). This patch replaces raw_cpu_read() with this_cpu_read() to protect against this race. 2018-07-11efi/x86: Fix mixed mode reboot loop by removing pointless call to ↵Ard Biesheuvel1-9/+3
PciIo->Attributes() Hans de Goede reported that his mixed EFI mode Bay Trail tablet would not boot at all any more, but enter a reboot loop without any logs printed by the kernel. Unbreak 64-bit Linux/x86 on 32-bit UEFI: When it was first introduced, the EFI stub code that copies the contents of PCI option ROMs originally only intended to do so if the EFI_PCI_IO_ATTRIBUTE_EMBEDDED_ROM attribute was *not* set. The reason was that the UEFI spec permits PCI option ROM images to be provided by the platform directly, rather than via the ROM BAR, and in this case, the OS can only access them at runtime if they are preserved at boot time by copying them from the areas described by PciIo->RomImage and PciIo->RomSize. However, it implemented this check erroneously, as can be seen in commit: dd5fc854de5fd ("EFI: Stash ROMs if they're not in the PCI BAR") which introduced: if (!attributes & EFI_PCI_IO_ATTRIBUTE_EMBEDDED_ROM) continue; and given that the numeric value of EFI_PCI_IO_ATTRIBUTE_EMBEDDED_ROM is 0x4000, this condition never becomes true, and so the option ROMs were copied unconditionally. This was spotted and 'fixed' by commit: 886d751a2ea99a160 ("x86, efi: correct precedence of operators in setup_efi_pci") but inadvertently inverted the logic at the same time, defeating the purpose of the code, since it now only preserves option ROM images that can be read from the ROM BAR as well. Unsurprisingly, this broke some systems, and so the check was removed entirely in the following commit: 739701888f5d ("x86, efi: remove attribute check from setup_efi_pci") It is debatable whether this check should have been included in the first place, since the option ROM image provided to the UEFI driver by the firmware may be different from the one that is actually present in the card's flash ROM, and so whatever PciIo->RomImage points at should be preferred regardless of whether the attribute is set. As this was the only use of the attributes field, we can remove the call to PciIo->Attributes() entirely, which is especially nice because its prototype involves uint64_t type by-value arguments which the EFI mixed mode has trouble dealing with. Any mixed mode system with PCI is likely to be affected.
